Privacy
There is no account, no login and no email gate on this site, so there is very little to say here. What there is, is said plainly.
The address you type
When you check an address, it is sent once to our server to be turned into a coordinate. Our server passes the text to two geocoding services to do that: the US Census Bureau geocoder, and Photon, a public geocoder run by Komoot GmbH in Germany on OpenStreetMap data, so the text crosses a border. The request comes from our server, not your browser. Each service handles it under its own policy, and Komoot's is at komoot.com/privacy. We do not store a street address, we do not log it against you, and the distances are measured in your own browser. A town or place name with no numbers in it is kept for up to 30 days so the next person who types it gets an answer faster. A bare ZIP code or a state name is resolved in the browser and never leaves your device at all.
If you use the location button, your browser asks your permission and the coordinate is used for that one lookup. It is not sent anywhere.
What the server sees
Like any website, our host processes standard request information, such as your IP address, to deliver pages and to stop abuse, and the address lookup is rate limited by IP address. There is no advertising, and nothing about you is sold to anyone.
Analytics
We use four tools to see which pages are useful and where the site is hard to use:
- Google Analytics counts visits and pages and sets cookies to recognise a returning browser. Google handles that data under its own policy.
- Microsoft Clarity records how pages are used, including clicks, scrolling and mouse movement, and can replay a visit as a recording. It sets cookies. Text you type into the address lookup, the search box and the correction form is masked before it is recorded. Microsoft handles that data under its own policy.
- Umami counts page views without cookies.
- Cloudflare Web Analytics, added by our host, counts page views without cookies.
None of them receives the address you check: it is never put in a page address, and it is masked in recordings. You can block all four with any standard content blocker and every page still works.
Email alerts
If you sign up for alerts, we keep your email address and the places you chose, and nothing else. For an address, we keep the point rounded to about 100 metres and the distance, never the street address you typed. We email you only when a new data center is recorded for a place you chose. We never share, sell or rent the list. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link that deletes your address and your places.
Corrections you send
A correction you email or submit is kept for as long as it takes to check and answer it, and what it changed is recorded so the fix can be traced. It is not used for anything else.
People in the data
This dataset is about commercial and industrial facilities and the companies behind them. Where a public filing names an individual, for example an officer of a company on a state register, we use it only to connect companies and we do not publish a page about a person. If you think a page identifies you, write to corrections@datacentersnearme.org and it is treated as urgent.
