How much water does a data center use

We hold an actual water figure for 18 campuses out of 4,091. That is not enough to answer the question from this dataset, and pretending otherwise would be the wrong kind of confident.

What is well established elsewhere: cooling method decides almost everything. An evaporative-cooled facility consumes water continuously, while a closed-loop or air-cooled one consumes very little and pays for it in electricity instead. That trade is why two campuses of the same size can differ by orders of magnitude, and why a single national average is close to meaningless.

State water withdrawal permits are the records that would answer this properly, per facility, and they are not collected in this build. Until they are, this page will keep saying so.
